Leamington Angling Newsletter May 2020

Leamington Angling Waters re-open

With Leamington Angling Waters now open again, we have been experiencing large numbers of anglers taking advantage of the good weather. So, here are a few reminders and ideas, not in any particular order.

Members can renew their membership online here https://www.leamingtonangling.co.uk/membership-paypal and member’s day tickets are available here:-

https://www.leamingtonangling.co.uk/member-s-day-tickets-guest-tickets

The post for membership books is a bit slow at the moment. Most tackle shops are now open for a “click and collect” service and they also have membership books as do our bailiffs.

Please make a special effort to observe the Covid 19 social distancing regulations. If we are all sensible, we will stay safe. Just because we can get out there fishing, doesn’t mean it’s all over.

You will notice that there are several items below relating to poaching/fish theft highlighted by our match secretary Phil Mattock. You are reminded that there is NO FISHING on the rivers until June 16th and so if you see anyone fishing river stretches before that, they are breaking the law. Call the EA hotline on 0800 80 70 60.

Jack’s Tench at Napton

Hi Anthony

Here’s a shot from yesterday at Napton, Jack had a double take and coped brilliantly. I’ll try and get a few more good photos of the venue over the next few days.

Best regards  Jason Forrester

Entomologist’s Delight!

Interesting beetle species found at Snitterfield during a recent work party. Cockchafer. No, we didn’t make that name up, the common English name for Melolontha melolontha is indeed the cockchafer. Although they are beetles they are also commonly called May bugs. These large beetles emerge as adults in May or June after living in the soil as larvae for 3-5 years.

They are strong though inelegant fliers and are attracted to light, meaning they often fly through open windows but are not harmful to humans.
Phil.

Poachers at Stratford

I’ve received a report from our friends at Stratford AA. One if their members found a gill net across the Avon next to the Seven Meadows footbridge at Lucy’s Mill.
When pulled in with the help of passers by and a canoeist it was found to contain chub, tench, carp, pike and roach.

Some of these were large specimens. The fish were released and returned alive.
The net was collected and taken away by the person that found it.
A separate report has been made to the EA.

We received a Facebook message this morning of a lure angler fishing Lucy’s Mill, he was moved on by a member.
Report has been made to the EA

Ruby’s Napton Tench

Hi Anthony,

Just a quick email to share Ruby’s capture from yesterday (17th May). We didn’t weigh it but it was about 4lbs.

Napton has been fishing well, but the fish are now pushing down towards the shallow end, ready for spawning. We have also had some cracking rudd and a few large roach. One angler had a specimen roach, weighing over two pounds.

Only spent an hour and a half at Jubilee Pools this lovely evening, shredded the gears on my reel so session cut short, but it did not matter as I caught three beautiful Commons off the top before my reel gave up. 10, 9 & 7lb respectively. Some very cute Goslings too!

Glad I cut my head off and not the fish in the photo.

Jubilee Pools

Hi Anthony,

A pic attached for you to use from Friday 15th May.

I’m a brand new member of LAA and was impressed with the Horseshoe Pool when there on Thursday and Friday for the first time.  A really good water (I caught well on Thursday – 7 tench, a good bream and a crucian, but less well on Friday), which is really well maintained in terms of pegs, paths, etc.  Seems like a great club with a great feel about it.

Regards,   Hector

River Avon – Wasperton Work Party

Hi Ant,

A couple of pictures taken this morning showing the bottom car park and path to the pegs at Wasperton.

Work party has started again and all being well should be ready for the start of the river season.

Take care and keep well
